How to Get a License to become an Insurance Agent or Broker

Selling Insurance is a great path for those who want to have a career in Insurance industry. Even if it’s not required, a degree in Marketing or Insurance is an advantage by individuals who want to pursue careers as an Insurance Agent or Broker. Most companies prefer to hire individuals who possess educational background in Finance, Math, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration and similar courses. Part-time experience from an Insurance agency is an advantage. You must also be proficient in using computer and software used by insurance agents and companies.
All states require individuals to take an insurance licensure exam before selling insurance products and policies.  Insurance pre-licensing exams are available through local schools and online providers that are accredited and authorized by the State Department of Insurance in different states.  Most courses consist of 20-40 or more hours of General Insurance courses, 6-12 hours of Professional Ethics courses, and preparatory exams and quizzes. These courses cover all the insurance fundamentals and laws.
An Insurance Agent or Broker must be familiar with different types of Insurance such as Life, Health, Disability, Long-term Care, Property and Casualty. Today, many insurance agents handle and sell multiple products and policies.
After taking the exam and passing all the requirements for your insurance license, you will need to maintain and renew the license by taking Insurance Continuing Education every two years.
