An Eco-city Is Rising in China

It’s just half the acreage of Manhattan but when Tianjin Eco-city is finished sometime in 2020, it will be the world’s biggest city that was designed from the ground up as a sustainable eco-city. In fact, the 30-sq km project is already the most ambitious sustainable-city construction on the planet today.

As cities go, Tianjin Eco-city is unique, being a project of two governments, the People’s Republic of China and Singapore. It’s located some 90 mi (150 km) southeast of Beijing on non-arable land that used to be, among other things, a wasteland featuring a 2.6 sq. km wastewater pond. It took the Tianjin developers three years to clean and detoxify the land.

As home and host to 350,000 people when it’s completed, Tianjin Eco-city aims to be substantially green. To achieve this, the developers have set for themselves high standards for air quality, drinking-water quality, transportation, and carbon emissions.

The developers, for instance, are targeting partial independence from nonsustainable and polluting energy sources through the citywide use of solar panels, wind turbines, and ground-source heat pumps. They plan to have at least a fifth of the eco-city’s total energy needs supplied by zero-emission energy sources.

An integrated waste collection system is already set up; its centerpiece, a pneumatic waste-collection management system from Envac, a global supplier of automated vacuum-waste-collection solutions, that effectively makes garbage trucks unnecessary.

Being green, the eco-city’s urban design emphasizes green, breathing spaces and open-air recreational facilities. It gives special importance to pedestrian and bicycle traffic. It also features a tram line which, together with the pedestrian and bicycle lanes, crisscrosses the eco-valley set within the city.

Like any city, Tianjin Eco-city is projected to attract industries. This early, some six hundred companies have set up facilities in the eco-city and more are expected to relocate in the coming years. However, they will need to be green industries or industries that adhere to green best practices. The developers clarified though that the eco-city is not intended to be an exclusive city for green advocates or the privileged, pointing out that the city in fact provides subsidized housing for its workers and their families. Barring a major hitch, the start-up area, according to the developers, is expected to be finished by the end of 2013. It will be a major boost for sustainable development and great beginning for something that started out as a dumpsite.

Wheeling and Dealing with Office Politics



Ah, yes, office politics. The reason we all haul ourselves out of bed early in the morning, never mind the pounding post-tequila hangover, and deposit protesting body and soul at our desk, ready to work and, well, play dirty.

Politics, the office variety and otherwise, is by nature “dirty,” employed usually to gain illegitimate, unearned advantages over another for financial dividends and a career upgrade. It’s sordid business, but like the foot fungus in the men’s locker room, it’s nearly impossible to avoid. It applies to company presidents, to doctors, to medical office assistants, even to pharmacy technicians. It’s the fungus that we all must learn to deal with at the office.

So here are some tips on playing dirty cleanly:

 Chill. When the manager congratulates the supervisor for a bright idea that the supervisor thought was stupid when you presented it to him, chill. When your favorite back stabber in the next cubicle complains to the supervisor that you talk too long to the client, chill. Keep your cool at all times and under all circumstances. It will serve you in good stead in the long run. Besides, there’s always karma.

Fire and forget. Well maybe not the first, but definitely the second. The phrase comes from modern air-to-air combat: you fire your missile and forget about it because it’s going to hit and destroy its target no matter what.  Thank goodness the office is not the skies over Sarajevo, but it is definitely a place for (lots of) forgiveness. It’s a good word to have on you and, believe it or not, even a better weapon to wield. Amen to that.

Psst. Did you hear about the hamster in Mr. Pendington’s pocket? If you did, don’t say. If you didn’t, don’t ask. Simply steering clear of gossip (yes, it’s hard, especially if it’s about hamsters) and gossipmongers guarantees that you don’t get burned by the heat and creates a firebreak at your end that could contain the gossip before it conflagrates into something wilder. It may not be the hottest and the latest, but mum’s the word. 

All’s Fair in War and Peace. Yep, that’s a little confused, but office politics is like that, often confused and always devoid of good sense. But if push comes to shove, shovel back the Shetland pony. But do take counsel from Dr. Debra Davenport, an organizational development expert: Target and deal with the behavior, never the person. Confront the maligning party privately, fairly, and if possible, without prejudging the situation or the person. Peace.

Patience is definitely a key but don’t forget to work hard, get the right career training courses and play fair always.

T-Mobile Whistleblower Ordered Reinstated, Compensated

Telecom giants Deutsche Telekom AG and its subsidiary T-Mobile USA Inc. are in trouble over the dismissal of a T-Mobile employee in 2009. The U.S. Department of Labor recently ordered T-Mobile to pay the worker $345,972 in back wages and damages as a result of verified violations of the whistleblower-protection provisions of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002.

T-Mobile is a mobile-network operator providing wireless voice, messaging, and data services based in Bellevue. Its mother company, Deutsche Telekom AG, is a telecommunications and information technology service company headquartered in Bonn, Germany.

Although OSHA workplace safety training—for instance, OSHA 10 training and OSHA 30—is now a pre-employment requirement by many employers, many workers remain unaware of their whistleblower rights while continuing to be exposed to avoidable worksite hazards because of employer ignorance, negligence, or plain disregard of basic health and safety standards.

The Department of Labor’s order came after an investigation by the Seattle office of the department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was able to verify the dismissed employee’s complaint that his (or her) termination (OSHA does not reveal the particulars of complainants) came about because he had reported his concerns about fraudulent charges, amounting to millions of dollars in total, were being made to hundreds of accounts involving international corporate customers.

"The Sarbanes-Oxley Act provides protection to workers who report alleged violations of federal laws relating to fraud against shareholders," explained Dean Ikeda, the OSHA regional administrator in Seattle. "This case clearly shows the department's commitment to ensuring that individuals are provided the protections and relief afforded by the law, and sends a strong message that retaliatory actions will not be tolerated."

The various whistleblower provisions enacted by Congress uniformly prohibit employers from retaliating against employees who voice out concerns or supply information to the employer or the authorities, usually the government. According to OSHA, these concerns and information are considered protected under the law.

Managing People as People



Whether you’re the doctor in charge of the medical office assistant, the real estate manager in charge of the insurance agent, or the pharmacist in charge of the pharmacy technician you will need to think and act like a manager of people to get things efficiently done at your office. Here are a few tips, by no means complete, from business-management-practices guru David Maister to get you started. 


Do something for the person you want to do something for you. I scratch your back, you scratch my back. It’s intuitive, it’s natural, it works. Still, many managers don’t exercise this managerial maxim often enough. According to Maister, invest first in a relationship with your subaltern (or your boss—it works both ways) to get things smoothly done at the office. It doesn’t have to be anything big; showing an interest in him or her as person will do for a start.


Don’t criticize. Criticism, constructive or not, is an attack, says Maister, and the unmitigated natural response to it is a counterattack. As human beings, we can’t help it. As members of a team in an organization, counterattacking won’t do of course. Instead, Maister suggests a stance that starts with: “I’ve got a problem. Will you help me?”


Do be sincere about giving help. Given constructive criticism, to what extent does the recipient absorb it? The answer, states Maister, is:  to the extent that the recipient thinks the criticism giver is sincerely trying to help him (or her). Therefore, to be influential (that is, to be a able to influence an employee or coworker to do what you want) you have to be convincing enough to show that you care about him as a human being.
