Wegmans Food Markets Inc., is being penalized by federal
safety officials for practices at its corporate bakery and distribution centers
that are unsafe.
"We immediately addressed the majority of issues
brought to our attention as a result of the inspection and are working on
others," Wegmans spokeswoman Jo Natale said. "A review of the
citations is under way to determine our next steps."
OSHA or Occupational Safety and Health Administration is
planning to penalize them for about $195,200 for “alleged repeat and serious
workplace safety standards” in relevance to the procedures of the company when
machines are under repair at the Gates facility. It has been said that they
were not adhering to the safety standards for the startup and shutdown of
machineries. Wegmans workers were also found to be lacking training for the
correct procedures.
"The fines proposed for these violations are
significant because this employer previously has been cited for similar
hazards," said Arthur Dube, OSHA's area director for western New York.
The company has been given 15 business days to comply or
contest the findings before the independent Occupational Safety and Health
Review Commission.
Safety standards were set by OSHA to ensure that all workers
in different industries are safe while in operation. Certain rules and
guidelines are given and should be followed by any company to make sure that
they don’t get any citations from OSHA and that they don’t get any workers
harmed.
Safety trainings like OSHA 10 and
OSHA 30
are also available for companies to provide their workers or individuals to
take on their own to make sure that they are properly aware and trained about
the hazards at work. Having the education about safety can decrease accidents,
injuries and even smoothen your company operations.
OSHAcampus.com is one of the providers of these courses. A
lot of companies and organization found a lot of ease with their online
training programs. Interested individuals can pay a visit to their website www.oshacampus.com to have more details
about the safety programs they offer.
